How to remove the MID/ Radio/ Business CD from a BMW 5 Series EURO SPEC E39

FOR INFORMATION ONLY - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

The removal of the Business CD player and MID unit is relatively simple. It is different from the US spec BMW E39, for which the removal is very well explained on the web for e.g: www.bmwtips.com.

As there was a lack of instructions for the Euro spec BMW E39, here goes:

Image

1. Pull out the volume knob.

2. Locate the notch at the right hand side of the volume stem.

Image

3. Put in a flat screw driver, pull to the right and at the same time put a small screw driver on the left hand side of the MID unit and pull it out.

4. To remove the business CD player, locate the 2 x Allen bolts underneath the CD unit and loosen them (Please note that the bolts are not to be removed but only loosened)

Image

5. Just slide out the CD unit which should now come out quite easily.

6. This took quite some time to figure out as it is quite tightly fit in. First pull up the connector and then pull it at the back.

There you have it - empty bay of the MID unit and business CD player. Re fitting the unit is the same process in reverse.

Hope that this article has been of some help.

Hi John,

It is not actually a screw beside the volume knob. It is only a small notch that you have to pull to the right to unlock the MID unit although I'm not sure whether it is the same for the 2001 E39. Is your BMW a US or EURO spec?

Hi Eddy

Its a Euro Spec but the screw/latch part is missing
Cannot trace anything behind volume knob

Regards
John

Did u check if there is a Torx screw inside the volume knob stem (metal part with plastic knob removed)?

I'm willing to install the new parrot mki9200 (bluetooth+mp3/ipod control) on my e39 but was looking to do that on my own as few garages there know what to do...

I was wondering how to remove this audio unit, and i'm glad i landed there after long searches (found through someone link on a forum).

Great job, I can't wait looking at mine, but i'm pretty confident now i just need to but the parrot kit and can sort it out myself (the rest of the kit installation is just a matter of connecting stuff together).

Cheers !

Mikael.

Hi Mikael,

Glad this article helped you out.
Let us know about the progress you make with your install!
Mikael - Parrot mki9200 install   | 88.170.2.xxx | 2008-11-15 15:19:19
Hi there

Parts have been gathered this week.

I now got the mki9100, which a very cool unit and the bmw adapter so to have no hassle soldreing wires on the crazy bmw plug

I'll probably be installing it tomorrow so I let you know how it went and will try to get some pictures of the install so you'd be able to replicate it.

But it clearly seems very easy : adapter is a bmw female plug to connect on the front bwm connector from the car, and a male bmw connector to connect to the radio. In the middle there are the proper connectors to parrot unit, so the big deal would just be where to have the parrot differents wires to go through to assure perfect fit.

Parrot kit is made of microphones (that are connected to parrot unit), screen (connected as well) and a remote control which just needs to be taped somewhere or tied to the steering wheel (all adhesive and strap are provided). The leftover is a cable that connects to the parrot unit and is fitted with ipod connector and usb.

the SD card reader is at the back of the parrot screen. So that's cool, I'aint got no ipod and don't bother with portable music : was just looking for a proper way to fit bluetooth into the car and mp3 mmusic as well.

What I should have with a couple of minutes install soon.

Sounds utterly cool.

I'll keep in touch,

Mikael.

Hi there,

I've received all the stuff and would be installing it tomorrow, I'll keep in touch with you regarding the install process that sounds easy : parrot bmw adapter is really easy (just plug it between the radio connector and the car connector).

The main hassle would be to fit the wires that go outside (microphone, screen and the eventual ipod adapter) out of the board properly.

I'll keep in touch,

Mikael.
